Puzzle #75: “Tarzan’s Trial”

Suppose Tarzan was hauled into court — perhaps for assaulting tresspassers on his jungle estate.  Who, or what, would you expect to take the stand in his defense?  And suppose he insisted on a jury of his peers.  Who would fill the box?  As a Viscount, Lord Greystoke is a peer of the realm, but as Lord of the Jungle he’d consider his equals, if any, to be the noble great apes.  Perhaps we could call upon 6 of each?  That should be interesting to see.  In any case, it’s a trying situation.

Puzzle #71: “Toil and Trouble”

“As is frequently pointed out by the critics, Macbeth was probably written in haste. No one knows why Shakespeare was in a hurry, unless he was nauseated by all the bloodshed. At any rate this explains the unusually large number of tragic flaws in the play.

-Richard Armour, Twisted Tales from Shakespeare

As we all know, this is November, and the time for witches is past.   However, there’s always time for our favorite trio of weird sisters, so this week we serve up a tasty brew of etymological excess straight from the cruciverbalist’s cauldron.  A cursed good time should be had by all.  (The purists among us may note, upon working the puzzle, that only the title is even vaguely related to The Scottish Play.  This is true, but it still gives me something to blather about in this introduction, which is really all the excuse I need.)

Puzzle #70: “Net Profit”

Welcome. As of the time of this posting, the election is pretty much over and, believe it or not, life and the crossword puzzle go on. We are pleased to report that this week’s puzzle is 98.7% politics-free. How can we accomplish this amazing feat? Lots of meditation and extensive use of ear-plugs. So why not kick back, forget voting booth, and fall into the grid? Happy solving.

Puzzle #69: “Ghost Story”

October is drawing to a close, and that means scary things are in the air — election day, the stock market, and (oh yeah!) a small holiday that that you might choose to call Samhain, All Saints Eve, or Candy Day.  To commemorate these frightening times, we bring you a hauntingly appropriate puzzle.  We’d describe it as fiendish, except that we decided to give even neophyte solvers a ghost of a chance of solving it before the witching hour — thus, you’ll have to settle for a challenge that is merely impish.

Puzzle #68: “After the Fall”

Once more we give you greetings from the amidst the colorful leaves and trees of Western PA.  Fall is upon us, and the foliage is falling, and so it falls upon us to foresee what might befall once Fall has fully fallen.  Or something like that.  (And, for our loyal Florida contingent, we wish to assure you that it really does fall below fifty degrees in the frigid wastes north of the Georgia border.   In fact, the fahrenheit factor is falling fast.)
