Puzzle #85: “Tool Time”

Well, hopefully you’ve made it through the worst of the winter, and it’s time to see whether your house made it through intact.  Got some holes in the roof?  A leaky faucet?  No problem.  Just pull out your handy tool chest and get to work.  In no time at all, you’ll find that there’s no problem so small that it can’t be made into a big problem with the application of the right equipment.  Then you won’t feel at all guilty about calling in the roofer, the plumber, and anyone else you might need.  You might find yourself with some holes in your wallet and a leaky bank account, but no system is perfect.

Puzzle #84: “I’ll Call You”

The official publication time of this puzzle is Wednesday, February 11th — which is practically the same as Saturday, February 14th.  Thus, we know what most young men are thinking about:  how the heck they are going to get restaurant reservations after they put everthing off till the last minute.  We are so moved by this touching sentiment that we cannot resist putting out our very own black, white, and highly symmetric tribute to this wonderful season of chocolates, flowers, and overpriced greeting cards.

Puzzle #83: “I Go to Pieces”

When I see her comin’ down the street
I get so shaky and I feel so weak
I tell my eyes look the other way
But they don’t seem to hear a word I say

And I, go to pieces and I wanna hide
Go to pieces and I almost die
Everytime my baby passes by

— Del Shannon

Puzzle #82: “Put It There, Pal”

I don’t care where I’m goin’
Just as long as I’m with you
Put it there, pal. Put it there

I’ll be just like your horses
And I’ll stick to you like glue
Put it there, pal. Put it there

— Hope & Crosby (lyrics by Burke and Van Heusen)

Puzzle #80: “Gather Round”

Come gather round and listen, if you can get that near
If not, we’ll use a microphone so all poor souls can hear
And hold hands in a circle, or stare bored straight ahead
Rejoice in your rebellion, or wish you were in bed

— John Wesley Harding

Puzzle #78: “In Memo — Re:”

The art of inter-office communication: “I’ve been reading and re-reading Redding’s memo re: Reed’s dinghy.  Please refresh my memory regarding Rod’s redactions of Redding’s memo.  Regards, Red.”  Try typing that three times, fast.

Puzzle #77: “Go to the Source”

“So where do you get ideas for puzzles?”  I prefer to follow the Harlan Ellison system:  send two dollars to a post office box in Schenectady, and they’ll send you back an idea.  All that’s left is the small matter of filling in the letters and clues.  If you lose the P.O. box address, you can always resort to the other traditional source of ideas: beat your head against your desk until you brains fall out, and an idea takes nest in the resulting empty space.   In either case, your mileage may vary.
