Puzzle #18: “Delerium Tremens”

This weeks puzzle is another easy Tuesday-level challenge, with a clean theme and a relatively simple grid and cluing to go with it. However, you’ll still get a lively selection of vocabulary — no roman numerals or three-toed-sloths here ¹ — and a variety of clues you haven’t encountered before.   Take your pick of formats: you can get it as an Across Lite file or as a printable PNG image.  However you choose to consume it, happy solving, and watch out for the pink elephants.

¹ Apologies to any unau fans in the audience. Perhaps our arboreal friend can make an appearance in a forthcoming puzzle, but only by special invitation.

Puzzle #17: “Halloween Formal”

You might not have noticed without my reminder, but Halloween falls on October 31st this year, so we’re celebrating by giving you a special Halloween crossword puzzle.  It’s a party, and we invite you to pull out your best fancy cape and buy your mummy a new mink wrap because it is strictly a formal affair.  (If you are in doubt about proper Halloween decorum, we invite you to check out Miss Manners’ Guide to Correctly Excruciating Behavior.)

This crossword is a fully themed Times-style puzzle, stuffed chock-full of holiday goodness, and has been graded at roughly at Wednesday/Thursday level of difficulty.  You can download it in Across Lite format, or as a printable PNG image.

Update: several people have asked for an answer key for this puzzle, and I’m happy to oblige.  You can download it here.

Puzzle #16: “Except After C”

Q: Where can you find a spelling bee?
A: Taking it EZ in the Ps and the IV.

Puzzle #16Ok, that was a very bad joke.  But this week’s crossword puzzle isn’t bad at all.  Expect to find the difficulty somewhere around Wednesday-level on the NYT scale, with a nice, strong theme.

The best way to download the puzzle is in Across Lite format, but it is also available as a printable PNG image.  Whatever packaging you choose, enjoy the puzzle and drop us a comment to let us know how you liked it.

Puzzle #15: “Joy to the World”

Jeremiah was a bull frog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine

— Hoyt Axton

Puzzle #15This week’s crossword puzzle is another hodge-podge: it’s got a nice simple Monday-level theme, but I’ve kicked it up a notch with some Tuesday/Wednesday-level vocabulary and clues. Overall, it’s got some nice fresh entries, and should be fun without being too hard.

By now, you probably know the drill: you can download it as either in either Across Lite format, or as a printable PNG image. Either way, be sure to share and enjoy.

Puzzle #14: “Lonely Street”

Puzzle #14Beekeeper Crosswords has recently hit an anniversary:  three months of (free) weekly puzzles, and still going strong.  For this week we give another classic-style puzzle: not too hard, not too easy — call it a NYT Tuesday-level challenge.

As usual, you can download it in Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image.  (If there are any other formats you might like to see, drop me a comment.  I can probably accommodate you.)

Puzzle #13: “Hidden Worlds”

Puzzle #13After two weeks of “special event” puzzles, this week’s free crossword returns a simple, traditional offering.  What you get is a Thursday-level themed puzzle with a healthy dose of wordplay to keep you amused.  Extra credit goes to the first person to point me to an existing recipe for 57 across (making allowance for small substitutions).

The puzzle can, as usual, be downloaded in Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image.

Puzzle #12: “It’s Only a Game”

“It’s only a game”, “It’s only a game”, I’m muttering under my breath.
“It’s only a game”, “It’s only a game”, like dying is only death….

— Tom Paxton

Puzzle #12This one goes out to all the gaming geeks. September 25 marked the release of the most anticipated game of the year, and Beekeper Labs is busy battening down the hatches and adjourning to the gaming consoles. However, since we can’t think about anything else, our obsession sorta took over this week’s crossword puzzle. Of course, it’s still workable by anybody, and runs about Wednesday level on the NYT difficulty scale. On the other hand, non-gamers may not know what’s up with the theme. If it seems confusing to you, look around for a fellow who doesn’t seem to have slept since Monday — he’ll be able to tell you what the references are all about.

We recommend that you download it in Across Lite format, but it is also available as a printable PNG image. As always, I appreciate comments. Should I do more specialized themes like this, or stick with “general purpose” puzzles? If you don’t want to leave a public comment, you can always e-mail me at keeper@beekeeperlabs.com.

Puzzle #11: “Talk Like a Pirate”

Puzzle #11Avast, ye slavering sea-dogs.  Prepare to be cast ASEA.  In case ye didn’t be knowin’ already, September 19th be International Talk Like a Pirate Day.  And so, for all of my fine cruciverbilizin’ cronies, I be casting out a crossword challenge.  Hoist the JIB, watch out for the stray ERNE, and join me in a piratical themed puzzle.  I’ll not be having no lily-livered land-lubbers be squalling for mercy, however — this ain’t no sissy classroom puzzle.  This is a full-fledged Times-style crossword puzzle such as Peter PAN might have suffered at the hands of the dreaded CAP’N Henry Hook.   Stock up on grog, sharpen your sword, and heave to, for there will be no quarter given today, me lads.

You may find the puzzle in Across Lite format (ye’d best be using version 2.0, if’n ye don’t already have it), or ye can download both the puzzle and the solution in printable PNG format.

Puzzle #10: “I’d Like to Buy an….”

Puzzle #10Okay, this isn’t really “Wheel of Fortune”.  It isn’t even “Merv Griffin’s Crosswords” (because we’ll always include a theme in every puzzle).  However, this week’s free crossword puzzle would still give Vanna a bit of exercise.  Our exhaustive lab testing reveals that this one rates around a Wednesday on the NYT difficulty scale, with an entertaining mix of relaxing and challenging clues.  (Thanks go out to Martha for assistance with the cluing on this puzzle.  I appreciate the help.)

You are encouraged to download the puzzle in Across Lite format, but it is also available as a printable PNG image.

Puzzle #9: “Nine Tenths of the Law”

Puzzle #9“Possession isn’t nine tenths of the law, it’s nine tenths of the problem” — John Lennon

This week’s free crossword puzzle gives you a theme with a pleasant bit of wordplay, wrapped up in a grid with an overall difficulty around Tuesday or Wednesday (as compared to a New York Times puzzle).  It should be fairly easy for experienced solvers, and accessible to almost anyone.

As always, you can download it in either Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image.  Happy solving.
