Puzzle #28: “On the Way”

Here we are again.  Lights!  Camera!  Erasers!   It’s showtime.  Our latest offering is another Wednesday/Thursday-level puzzle, with a nice mix of pleasantly easy words and clues and mind-bendingly annoying offerings.  (Odds are that you’ll learn at least one new fact from the puzzle, but I may be wrong — you are a clever lot, after all.)

True crossword junkies are encouraged to spend a few seconds admiring this puzzle’s grid.  It features full rotational symmetry, with an aesthetically pleasing interlock between the 11, 9, and 7 letter entries.  Non-junkies can ignore all of this and just enjoy the puzzle.  True crossword purists will probably simply count the number of three-letter words and sneer — there’s no pleasing everyone.  However, hopefully the puzzle will please you.  Let us know what you think.  Comments are open, or you can send mail to keeper@beekeeperlabs.com.

To get your very own copy of the puzzle, download from the link of your choice to get either the Across Lite version or a printable PNG version.

Puzzle #27: “Chop Chop”

Puzzle #27It’s Wednesday again, and time for a new crossword.  Normally, I’d be using this space to tell you all about how wonderful the puzzle is, but I’m running quite late today, and I figure by now you’re probably a regular reader who already knows what to expect.  (BTW, you should expect a crossword puzzle — that’s why the words “crossword” and “puzzle” appear so prominently above.  But you knew that already.)

So come and get it while it’s still piping hot, either as a mouth-watering Across Lite file, or an equally delicious printable PNG image.

Puzzle #26: “In Case of Emergency….”

Puzzle #26Those of you who follow this blog closely may have noticed that this puzzle is not being posted on Wednesday as promised.  There’s an excuse:  the computer which contained all of the appropriate software, word lists, and supporting technology toasted itself.  Apparently it failed to realize that it’s best to roast chestnuts at least 36 inches away from the power supply and the result, along with the computer, is history.  Therefore this week’s puzzle comes to you one day late, but it does come with an appropriate computer emergency theme included.

In more positive news our trusted team of reviewers has recovered from the figgy pudding incident.  This puzzle has therefore been tested; corrected when it failed; given the stamp of approval; and assigned a rating of “Wednesday” on the classic NYT rating scale.  (Thanks team — the puzzle wouldn’t be nearly as good without you.)

In spite of the delays, some things never change.  You can still download the puzzle in one of two highly popular forms:  either in Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image.  We look forward to getting back to our regular schedule next week, and to sharing another good year of cruciverbalism.

Puzzle #25: “Wrap It Up”

Puzzle #24Okay, it’s mostly over.  You’ve set up the tree, lit the candles, aired your grievances, and opened the packages.  But now Christmas, Hanukkah, and Festivus have ended.  (For those celebrating other holidays, I ask that you make appropriate adjustments.  If you’re celebrating Kwanzaa, this message will still be waiting for you in a week.  I apologize to you for the timing.) However, now it’s Wednesday, and that means you get to open up a new crossword puzzle.

Even if we’re running a bit late, we’ve tried to keep a bit of a holiday theme with this puzzle, so keep your eyes open.  Quite possibly you will find that the difficulty level is that of a Wednesday NYT puzzle, but our trusted team of reviewers all fell asleep over their figgy pudding, so  there is no official rating on the puzzle.  Regardless, you can definitely download it in either of two formats:  as an Across Lite file or as a printable PNG image.  Happy holidays and pleasant solving to you all.

Puzzle #24: “Acting Out”

Puzzle #24Wednesday again, and I think you all know the drill. We hereby present another original, themed, and free crossword puzzle for your enjoyment. It is roughly a Wednesday difficulty level on the New York Times scale, and and been rated “GF” for good fun by our highly biased panel of experts.

As always, you can download it in your choice of flavors, either chocolate or vanilla in Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image. Enjoy.

Puzzle #23: “It Came from Cupertino”

Puzzle #23Once again it is Wednesday, and once again I’ve spent more time creating a wonderful crossword puzzle for you than on coming up with nifty ways to describe it.  So here it is — it’s square; it has lots of words in it; and I think you’ll like it.  Our independent testing board has rated it at a Wednesday difficulty level and has approved 98.7% of the clues for publication.  However, this puzzle has not yet been rated by the MPAA.

As usual, you may choose to download it in either Across Lite format or as a printable PNG file.  Happy solving.

Puzzle #22: “A Hard Place”

Puzzle #22There’s not too much to say about this week’s puzzle.  It’s another easy one — about Monday/Tuesday on the New York Times scale.  All the usual guarantees apply:  it’s fully themed, and you won’t find any roman numerals, compass directions, or three-toed sloths contained herein.  We will make no warranty concerning four-letter pooches, three-letter avians, or culinary spreads, however; so you must solve at your own risk.

The puzzle is available in the usual two formats: either as an Across Lite file or as a printable PNG image.  Share and enjoy.

Puzzle #21: “High Hopes”

He’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie-in-the-sky hopes
So, any time you’re gettin’ low, ‘stead of lettin’ go, just remember that ant
Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant.

— Sammy Cahn

Puzzle #21Well, it’s Wednesday again, and like that rubber tree, we’re bouncing back with another free crossword puzzle.  Our team of ace reviewers has rated this one as having a Tuesday/Wednesday difficulty level, so it should be accessible to most casual solvers as well as the seasoned veterans in the audience.

Download it your favorite format — Across Lite for online solving, or a PNG image for simple printing.  Either way, we have high hopes that you’ll enjoy this one.

Puzzle #20: “Stop. Pay Troll.”

Puzzle #20“And what”, you might ask, “do you have for us this week?”  Well, we’re glad that you asked.  What we’ve got is 36 black squares, 189 white squares, and 76 clues — all artfully arranged in such a way as to maximize your solving pleasure.  “But you just described an ordinary crossword puzzle, right?”  Well, perhaps, but I could just as easily be describing a most excellent crossword puzzle.  You get to decide for yourself which one this is.  Once you figure it out, feel free to let us know.  The comment section is always open.

You can download the full complement of black squares, white squares and clues in either of two formats.  If you  go for the Across Lite format, you even get answers to go with it.  If you opt for the printable PNG image, you’ll just have to rough it.

Puzzle #19: “The Work of the Weavers”

If it wasn’a for the weavers, what would ye do?
Ye wouldn’a hae a cloth that’s made o’ wool.
Ye wouldn’a hae a coat o’ the black or the blue,
If it wasn’a for the work o’ the weavers.

-trad.

Puzzle #19This puzzle is in honor of my (soon to be) favorite Pittsburgh area yarn and knitting shop, Natural Stitches, which will most likely be opening its doors this Saturday, November 17. (Contrary to the title of the puzzle, the shop does not provide weaving supplies, but provides most everything else you might want “to feed your fiber fantasies”.) It also goes out to the various knitting, weaving, crocheting and other fiber arts blogs that provide such an active voice in the greater blogosphere. Hopefully y’all will find it interesting. For my regular audience, you’ll find that all the usual guarantees apply: this is a full, classic, themed puzzle in the NYT style, with roughly a Monday/Tuesday difficulty level.

The puzzle is available in two easy to use downloadable forms: as an Across Lite file, or as a printable PNG image. Take your pick, click, and enjoy.
