Ah! That was the element to the clue that I wasn’t getting. The reason, probably, is that neither “hoc” nor “med” are words… at least, according to my handy Webster’s. Perhaps “Quartet that runs post-haste and pre-menopausal” would have worked more swimmingly. Not to mention that it’s good for a yuk.

I suspect there’s nothing you weren’t getting — just an overly ambitious clue. The idea was supposed to be that those were the four letters that would be alphabetized between those two words, but I guess I failed the smell test.

Well, I’ll start off by saying I loved the theme entries, and also the clues for 3D and 7D.

But, er, 27D. I get the alphabet thing, but “post-hoc” and “pre-med”? Is there a dimension to the clue that I’m just not getting?
