Puzzle #12: “It’s Only a Game”

“It’s only a game”, “It’s only a game”, I’m muttering under my breath.
“It’s only a game”, “It’s only a game”, like dying is only death….

— Tom Paxton

Puzzle #12This one goes out to all the gaming geeks. September 25 marked the release of the most anticipated game of the year, and Beekeper Labs is busy battening down the hatches and adjourning to the gaming consoles. However, since we can’t think about anything else, our obsession sorta took over this week’s crossword puzzle. Of course, it’s still workable by anybody, and runs about Wednesday level on the NYT difficulty scale. On the other hand, non-gamers may not know what’s up with the theme. If it seems confusing to you, look around for a fellow who doesn’t seem to have slept since Monday — he’ll be able to tell you what the references are all about.

We recommend that you download it in Across Lite format, but it is also available as a printable PNG image. As always, I appreciate comments. Should I do more specialized themes like this, or stick with “general purpose” puzzles? If you don’t want to leave a public comment, you can always e-mail me at keeper@beekeeperlabs.com.

Puzzle #11: “Talk Like a Pirate”

Puzzle #11Avast, ye slavering sea-dogs.  Prepare to be cast ASEA.  In case ye didn’t be knowin’ already, September 19th be International Talk Like a Pirate Day.  And so, for all of my fine cruciverbilizin’ cronies, I be casting out a crossword challenge.  Hoist the JIB, watch out for the stray ERNE, and join me in a piratical themed puzzle.  I’ll not be having no lily-livered land-lubbers be squalling for mercy, however — this ain’t no sissy classroom puzzle.  This is a full-fledged Times-style crossword puzzle such as Peter PAN might have suffered at the hands of the dreaded CAP’N Henry Hook.   Stock up on grog, sharpen your sword, and heave to, for there will be no quarter given today, me lads.

You may find the puzzle in Across Lite format (ye’d best be using version 2.0, if’n ye don’t already have it), or ye can download both the puzzle and the solution in printable PNG format.

Puzzle #10: “I’d Like to Buy an….”

Puzzle #10Okay, this isn’t really “Wheel of Fortune”.  It isn’t even “Merv Griffin’s Crosswords” (because we’ll always include a theme in every puzzle).  However, this week’s free crossword puzzle would still give Vanna a bit of exercise.  Our exhaustive lab testing reveals that this one rates around a Wednesday on the NYT difficulty scale, with an entertaining mix of relaxing and challenging clues.  (Thanks go out to Martha for assistance with the cluing on this puzzle.  I appreciate the help.)

You are encouraged to download the puzzle in Across Lite format, but it is also available as a printable PNG image.

Puzzle #9: “Nine Tenths of the Law”

Puzzle #9“Possession isn’t nine tenths of the law, it’s nine tenths of the problem” — John Lennon

This week’s free crossword puzzle gives you a theme with a pleasant bit of wordplay, wrapped up in a grid with an overall difficulty around Tuesday or Wednesday (as compared to a New York Times puzzle).  It should be fairly easy for experienced solvers, and accessible to almost anyone.

As always, you can download it in either Across Lite format or as a printable PNG image.  Happy solving.
