CrossFire Experimental Builds
On this page you can find the latest non-official version of CrossFire,
with low-priority bug fixes and, eventually, some previews of upcoming
features. While they will tend to be fairly robust, they are subject to
change without warning and, of course, come with no guarantees.
The latest experimental build is
1.3.2alpha6, built on 12/7/2018.

How to get it:
- Windows
- Make sure that you are running Java 1.8 or later. The latest
version of Java can always be downloaded from http://java.com/.
- Download and run
the alpha installer.
It will remind you if you forgot step (1).
- Linux
- Make sure that you are running Java 1.8 or later. The latest
version of Java should be available at http://java.com/.
- Download and unpack
the alpha installer
in a location of your choosing.
- Run the supplied "crossfire" shell script.
- Macintosh (OS X 10.7.3 & later)
- Download
the app+Java JRE installer.
- Double click on the the installer. Typically, you should choose
the default options.
- Find the CrossFire application under "/Applications" and the
auxiliary files (i.e. default dictionary and sample puzzles) under
"/Library"
- Alternate for Macintosh (OS X 10.7.3 & later)
This distribution avoids the standard Macintosh installer, which
sometimes simply does nothing when it discovers traces of an old
installation on your machine. While more complex, it is pretty
much guaranteed to work even when the standard installer is being
uncooperative.
- Download the Macintosh "fallback distribution" to your machine.
- Unpack the file ("CrossFire-fallback.tgz") into a temporary directory.
- Copy the CrossFire app from the "Applications" subdirectory into "/Applications" on your machine.
- Copy all of the files from the "Library" directory to the directory "/Library/CrossFire/" on your machine. (You may need to create this directory.)
- Confirm that you can run the CrossFire app that you copied into "/Applications".
- Delete the temporary directory so that it isn't around to confuse any future installation attempts.
